Bedfordshire Rotarians forge partnership with Toastmasters International

Earlier this year, Rotary International formed an alliance with Toastmasters International, in a bid to enhance their skills, broaden networks and increase positive impact in their communities through this collaboration. In Bedfordshire, this partnership has been working well over the summer, despite the impact of COVID-19.

It was in January when 2019-2020 Rotary President, Mark Maloney and Deepak Menon, the 2019-2020 International President of Toastmasters, formed a strategic alliance to provide more opportunities for members for personal and professional growth.

In Bedfordshire, that partnership has been providing fruitful with a series of collaborative online seminars, providing some amazing outcomes when service meets leadership and communication.

The first foray in this alliance has been from Luton Someries Rotary and the Toastmasters International Orators, led by a collaborative team and hosted by Dr Violet Cuffy, a distinguished Toastmaster and Rotarian, and a senior lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire.

Over the summer, Dr Cuffy has been leading a series of webinars based on the response to COVID-19, with each show focused on a specific theme and related impacts.

The round table features experts across the world, who have been sharing their experience and knowledge of ways of managing this pandemic in an area of significant global impact.

Janet Peirce (correct) President of Luton Someries Rotary said: “This model demonstrates how Rotary and Toastmaster members have joined forces at the club and local level to deliver to a novel alliance concept with international impact.”

The first round table webinar focused on front line health carers. “The medical profession and their work are certainly a feat of leadership, good communication, and excellence in service,” added Janet.

“Maria Collins from ‘Home Instead Luton’ was recognised as a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, Rotary International highest award, for exceptional work in the home care sector.”

Other webinars have looked at youth leaders, with an international gathering of speakers from Barbados and Australia, followed by a session on arts and culture, and in September, the spotlight was turned on the environment.

“This collaborative project enables Rotarians and Toastmasters to showcases organizational, planning, speaking, moderation and leadership skills, while highlighting humanitarian work across the globe,” added Janet.

“I am motivated by the way our health carers, young people, and those in the arts have served their communities.

“I am even more excited in how Rotary International along with Toastmasters can be a force for good in developing projects across the world as a result of this new international alliance programme.

“Whether it be public speaking at joint events, or using leadership and project management skills, the Rotary International and Toastmaster International Team Up programme have you covered.

“There is much excitement in leveraging our unique yet similar strengths and meeting the evolving needs of current and prospective members.”

The webinars are being held every third Saturday of the month at 7pm. The next show Saturday October 17th looking at ‘New Ways of Working’.
