Hollywood film producer headlines World Polio Day event

It was a film about polio which delivered at the heart of the issue. ‘Breathe’ was released this time last year and the film’s producer had a very special reason for releasing the movie. To coincide with World Polio Day, Jonathan Cavendish will be holding a special question & answer session in London.

Film producer Jonathan Cavendish, the man behind the acclaimed film ‘Breathe’ will be headlining a special event in London later this month, on the eve of World Polio Day.

Jonathan brought to life the moving story of his own father’s spirited battle after being struck down by polio for a film launched 12 months ago.

Starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, the movie received rave reviews.

Now he will be speaking about the project on Tuesday, October 23rd at the Hyatt Regency in Portman Square, London.

BBC producer Samantha Simmonds will chair a question and answer session with Jonathan, which will also include films clips from ‘Breathe’.

Since ‘Breathe’, Jonathan produced ‘The Ritual’ starring Rafe Spall, along with ‘Fungus the Bogeyman’ for Sky and most recently ‘Death and Nightingales’, starring Jamie Dornan and Matthew Rhys, and which will be broadcast on BBC2 next month.

He has also produced Andy Serkis’ ‘Mowgli’ starring Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Andy Serkis and Benedict Cumberbatch which will be released by Netflix in 2019.

He will be sharing the platform with British Paralympic wheelchair racer, Anne Wafula Strike.

Anne contracted polio at the age of two, resulting in a later diagnosis of below T7 paralysis.

After having her son, she took up sport and became a Paralympian within three years and had a distinguished career in wheelchair racing, which saw her travel the world to compete against her peers.

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to disability sport and charity.

The event is being held in association with Rotary International to mark World Polio Day on October 24th.

It celebrates the 30th anniversary of the launch of Rotary’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative which has led to the almost eradication of polio across the world.

There have been just 17 cases of wild poliovirus so far this year.

There will be a drinks reception from 6.30 pm and networking after the Q&A.
