As The Queen today celebrates her 90th birthday, hundreds of school children have got involved with a Rotary project to write Her Majesty a birthday poem.
The ‘Poem for Her Majesty’ competition was organised by Peter Dowse of the Rotary Club of Brentwood Breakfast, and has seen over 400 seven to 17 year olds from across Great Britain and Ireland get creative and give The Queen a special birthday gift.
Having received a magnificent selection of entries, 17 winning poems were selected, which have been sent off to Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty to enjoy.
Rotary is committed to providing opportunities to young people, and one Interact club, the junior branch of Rotary for 12-18 years, at Gabel Hall School in Essex have also prepared a 90th birthday card which will be delivered alongside the poems.
On the project, Peter commented: “There has been an excellent response from schools submitting hundreds of poems. The winning poems were imaginative, well written and a joy to read and I hope The Queen feels the same way.”
Her Majesty The Queen, who became the longest-reigning British monarch in September 2015, will spend her birthday at Windsor Castle, before lighting the first of more than 1,000 beacons across the UK and abroad to commemorate the day.
In 2013, The Queen was given the Rotary International Award of Honour to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her Coronation.
