Paddington Rotary establish partnership to provide medical assistance

At least 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape violence in the past year. Now Rotary members from London and Bangladesh have joined forces to provide medical assistance to those refugees.

Rotary members from a London club have been supporting a medical project in Bangladesh assisting Rohingya refugees.

Rotary Paddington has partnered with Rotary Mahanagar in Bangladesh, to financially help setting up a medical camp project for the refugees who have fled to Bangladesh.

A four-strong team of medical professionals, including doctors from the United States, volunteered their time to work with the refugees.

Rotary Paddington had made the initial contact in the US to seek out medical professionals who would be willing to fly out to Bangladesh.

The Paddington club sponsored medicines and the Mahanagar club provided logistical support on the ground, including field security for the American team while at the camp and sorting travel arrangements.

Medical equipment was also donated by US-based sponsors, including incubators.

Club President, Anika Ali, said: “Our aim was to provide medical services to vulnerable Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, by setting up a medical base at the refugee camp.

“Our main targets were pregnant women, new-born babies and children.

“The medical camp lasted for three days and more than 1,000 people were treated.

“Drawing from the experiences of the project, we are now exploring providing educational support to the children from the refugee camps.”

The United Nations has accused Myanmar’s military of ethnic cleansing, but the Army in the Asian country claims it has been tackling insurgents.

The Rohingya are one of many ethnic minorities in Myanmar, where the government sees them as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh and denies them citizenship.
