Rotary fundraising and a haggis celebration

Rotary clubs around the United Kingdom have been busy fundraising for local charities and communities and celebrating Burns Night!

Christchurch Community Partnership (CCP) was one of the beneficiaries of the 2021 Christchurch Rotary Club’s Christmas collection.

Through the generous support of the local community, the club raised ÂŁ650 which was donated to Rev. Sandra Prudom – who is the CEO of CCP – by the Rotary club’s president Marianne Abley on the 24th January.

Marianne explained why Christchurch Rotary supports the Community Partnership as well as what CCP do.

She said “Christchurch Community Partnership is a wonderful local charity working closely with other organisations in the borough on issues such as homelessness, domestic violence and social isolation.

“We in Rotary are especially keen to help the less fortunate in our community.”

Every year alongside its normal fundraising, Channel Rotary organises a Winter Appeal to help people that are in need over the winter months.

This is a simple fundraiser on social media with a Just Giving page where the people who receive the ÂŁ250 DHSS Winter Fuel Payment may donate some of the money.

This year Channel Rotary have been able to donate ÂŁ1,000 to Age UK – South Kent Coast, the Folkestone Winter Shelter and the Folkestone Rainbow Centre.

The donations have helped with the purchase of medication, shopping and hot meals for the elderly as well as multiple homeless people with clothes and food.

Bill Flavell who is the Chair of Age UK South Kent Coast is extremely grateful for the donation and support they were given by Rotary.

“This donation has enabled the Charity to provide Christmas cheer and support to a good number of people whilst also giving a small gift to all the staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep clients safe and healthy.”

Borderland Rotary has been one of few Rotary Clubs to celebrate Burns Night the traditional Scottish way.

The club welcomed piper Andy Young as he first piped a welcome to the festivities and then paraded around the room. A merry time was had by all, poems have been recited and haggis toasted to.

It’s now time to get back to work on the club projects after the disruption of the last two years.”

Borderland Rotary President, Cathy Osselton said “I’d forgotten how loud bagpipes are when played indoors but it made for a great evening.
