Rotary members’ musical tribute to the Armed Forces

Dan Curtis and wife Laura are award-winning musical theatre composers and lyricists who have decided to mark the centenary of the First World War Armistice in a special way.

The work of the Cardiff couple is now a staple in the repertoire of artists performing musical theatre internationally, and has been performed at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the London Palladium.

They found success developing new music for some of the world’s most celebrated performers such as Lea Salonga, Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo.

This culminated in the production their first album, ‘Love on 42nd Street’ and the commission of their second album, ‘Overture’, which was released in October 2016.

Their numerous single releases have all topped the iTunes and Amazon Vocal Charts alongside ‘Love on 42nd Street’.

We were inspired from hearing their stories of bravery and sacrifice”

Now, for their latest project, Dan and Laura have bought together some West End cast members they to record a special musical tribute to the war heroes.

Their CD, entitled ‘The Hero’, is being released on November 2nd to coincide with the centenary of the end of World War One.

It is being actively promoted by Rotary in the UK and carries the Rotary logo.

Fortnum and Mason is also sponsoring the CD, with profits from sales going to the charity Help for Heroes.

Dan, who is a member of Cardiff Satellite Rotary club, Laura conceived the idea after a holiday in Orlando, Florida.

The Invictus Games were taking place in Orlando at the same time and many of the athletes were staying in the same hotel.

“We were inspired from hearing their stories of bravery and sacrifice,” explained Dan.

“We were full of admiration for those who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces.”

The germ of an idea was formed and the couple began working on composing the piece, which follows the story of a female soldier signing up before going into battle and eventually coming home.

It is a story which any soldier across the generations can identify with – from World War One soldiers in the trenches, to those serving in today’s conflicts.

Cardiff satellite is not a traditional club and is still building up membership, but we follow the ethos of Rotary – helping local and international communities”

Outside of writing music, Dan deals with civilian heroes as he has an engagement role with Wales Air Ambulance – speaking to groups and schoolchildren about their life-saving work to encourage fundraising.

It is a role which led to him joining Rotary when then President of Cardiff Rotary, George Mercer, formed a new satellite club in the Welsh capital.

“Cardiff satellite is not a traditional club and is still building up membership, but we follow the ethos of Rotary – helping local and international communities,” added Dan.

Dan and Laura have found success developing new music for some of the world’s most celebrated performers and their music has been championed on Elaine Page’s Sunday lunchtime programme on Radio 2.
