Rotary sitting at the heart of the community

Rotary isn’t just about staging big scene-set fundraisers, but smaller community events help to raise profile and much-needed cash. Here are examples of two worthy events in Devon and Surrey.

Rotary members from Sidmouth in Devon have raised over £2,000 to support a number of community projects.

The money was raised from a concert which took place at All Saints Sidmouth, featuring The Rivertones Harmony Chorus – a 50-strong all-male choir which sings unaccompanied.

They were joined by tenor soloist, John Burgoyne, son of David Burgoyne who headed the organising committee.

David said: “The proceeds will help us to entertain the elderly, those living on their own, and who would otherwise be unable to enjoy themselves.”

Meanwhile in Surrey, two dozen local charities and voluntary organisations took part in this year’s Combined Charities Christmas Fair organised by Leatherhead Rotary Club.

Staged at Leatherhead Theatre, the event raised awareness and money for their various causes through sales of Christmas cards and gifts, together with a variety of tombolas, raffles and other fundraising activities.

Throughout the day, an estimated 500 people visited the fair, helping to raise over £3,000 for the charities.

Rotary spokesperson, Simon Edmands, said the club were delighted with how well the day had gone.

He said: “Events like this are just what Rotary is all about, enabling other charities and voluntary organisations to raise funds from events and activities they might not necessarily be able to organise on their own.”
