The Open Kitchen in Hounslow is providing a valuable lifeline for the vulnerable in West London.
Supported by the Rotary Club of Hounslow, The Open Kitchen has been adapting to the social distancing rules of the coronavirus pandemic to help those in need.
“The Open Kitchen is free and open to all,” explained Rotarian Mukesh Malhotra. “So this could be the frail, needy, vulnerable, the homeless, and those with issues around income.
“Individuals are provided with a very nutritious meal, with a variety of food, twice a day.
“When I am there, it’s always an amazing and humbling time which I spend there.
“And I am always impressed by the different team of volunteers and the regular staff, including my dear friend Ehsan Shahid Chouhry, who provides great leadership very effectively and efficiently.”
Mukesh said that the way The Open Kitchen works is all done with respect and dignity, regardless of faith or gender.
The coronavirus has impacted the Open Kitchen. But in response, the team are providing 300 walk up collection of meals and now also 54 home deliveries for the elderly, disabled and those in lockdown.
Before the lockdown, the figures were 137 walk up collection and 11 home deliveries.
“This is a crucial time for one and all,” added Mukesh “With this in mind, the humanitarian efforts of The Open Kitchen with their team of volunteers are really amazing.
“They are true superheroes who are fighting against hunger and supporting the local community.”
Since The Open Kitchen opened, the Rotary Club of Hounslow has been supporting the venture, and last week made a ÂŁ500 donation.
The money will be used to buy food items from wholesalers, which will help them continue in their work.
Most recently, the Hounslow Rotarians have enabled food banks to work closer together by collecting 400kg of pasta and more than 250 tins of vegetables.
